"Poetry in Motion" is an innovative program aimed at combating drug abuse and
fostering personal growth among youth through the disciplined study of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ),
conflict resolution, and philosophical inquiry. This program uniquely blends the physical
discipline of martial arts with the introspective and expressive power of literature and writing,
providing participants with tools for self-expression and emotional resilience.
Each session in "Poetry in Motion" begins with an exploration of a central
theme derived from popular literature, historical quotes, and the lives of notable figures such as
former soldiers, martial artists, and philosophers. These themes are not only discussed but are
embodied in the day’s martial arts practice, allowing students to experience the rhythm,
cadence, and cathartic power of martial arts, much like poetry.
Morning Pages: Each class starts with a reflective writing exercise called "Morning
Pages,
" where students jot down their thoughts and feelings. This practice helps them
clear their mind and prepare for the day.
Literary Exploration: After the writing session, we introduce the theme of the day
through selected readings and discussions about the lives and philosophies of influential
figures who have shaped the way we understand courage, discipline, and resilience.
Martial Arts Application: The latter part of the class involves practicing BJJ techniques
that resonate with the day's theme. This approach helps solidify the lessons learned and
demonstrates how theoretical concepts can be applied in physical expression and
self-defense.
Drug Prevention: By engaging in physical activity and open discussions, students
develop healthier coping mechanisms for stress and peer pressure.
Personal Development: The program emphasizes discipline, respect, and confidence
through the mastery of martial arts and the thoughtful exploration of complex themes.
Catharsis and Expression: Just as poets use verse to navigate their world, our
students will use both words and martial arts to explore and express their identities.
